Celebrating Thanksgiving in an RV while traveling the highways of America is a great tribute to the holiday. Like our forefathers who traveled to a new location, made their home, and celebrated, RV enthusiasts can do the same.
One of the best things about traveling outdoors is the opportunity to explore nature and discover little gems you can use to make decorations. While camping, take a hike and gather pine cones, acorns, pine needles and decorative grass.
Create a centerpiece using the gathered items by arranging them in a basket or clear vase. Make several arrangements and place around the RV to celebrate the season.
Visit a local farmers market and purchase miniature pumpkins, gourds, squash and Indian corn to make a cornucopia. If you don’t have a traditional horn of plenty basket, use straw baskets or clear bowls and fill with the colorful items.
Bring along an assortment of fragrant potpourri such as pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and mulberry and place in dishes around the RV. The potpourri brings the aromas of the season right into your home-away-from home.
Bring some craft supplies such as construction paper, glue, and glitter and make fun holiday items such as miniature pumpkins or turkey place cards or holiday cutouts for the windows.
Plan a holiday inspired menu leading up to the big day such as whipping up a batch of flavorful pumpkin pancakes or serving a slice of warm pumpkin bread with butter for breakfast.
For the main event, plan ahead as far in advance as possible. You have several options and each will provide you with a Thanksgiving spread to enjoy.
- Prepare items that can be frozen and stored before leaving home such as cranberry sauce, fresh greens and gravy.
- Select frozen cakes and desserts unless you have time or want to make your own on turkey day.
- If you plan to cook your turkey while camping, be at your designated location so you have time to defrost the bird, prep and cook.
- An option is to prepare the bird before leaving home so only the side dishes and desserts need preparing.
